Cyberattacks: Government warns Russian escalation in Ukraine could lead to attacks on UK organisations!

Cyberattacks from Russia threaten every UK organisation, warned governments and intelligence agencies from around the world. This warning comes in response to the escalation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which includes foot soldier tactics as well as cyberattacks. 

Russian cyber operations have targeted Ukraine with destabilisation efforts for years, by way of infrastructure attacks, influence operations, website defacement, and attacks on Ukrainian banks and military networks. 

UK businesses now find themselves potential targets for cyber-attacks as Russia responds to sanctions imposed on them for violating international law. 

Russia maintains a range of offensive cyber tools that it could employ against global networks—from low-level denials-of-service to destructive attacks targeting critical infrastructure. 

What exactly is the threat from Russia?

The US and UK governments this week warned [PDF] of Russia-linked malware called Cyclops Blink, which can infect network equipment to exfiltrate data and attack downstream devices in key targets. This software nasty appears to be a replacement for Kremlin espionage-ware dubbed VPNFilter, which for one thing could detect the presence of industrial SCADA equipment. 

While there are not any specific cyber threats to the UK, the government is encouraging all businesses, – regardless of size – to take steps now to improve their cybersecurity and safeguard their critical systems.
